Emma Watson Biography

Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born in the 15th of April 1990 and her height is 5' 5". She was born in France and she is best known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series.

Emma was born in France, in a family of lawyers and she lived in Paris until the age of five and then moved with her mother to Oxford, England. Her parents, Jacqueline Duerre and Chris Watson divorced in 1995. She has a brother, Alex, who was born in 1993. As a young girl, Emma attended The Dragon School and by 2003, she was attending the Headington School in the city of Oxford. In June 2006, Emma Watson took the GCSE examinations achieving eight A and two A grades. She is now studying to take the Advanced Subsidiary levels in Art, Dance and English literature.

Before being picked for the Harry Potter film series, her performances were limited to leading roles in school plays such as Arthur: The Young Years and The Happy Prince. Also, she took part in the Daisy Pratt Poetry Competition, where she won first place for her year (when she was seven).

Emma Watson was 11 in 2001 when she made her debut as an actress in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (in the United States was released as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone) in which she played the role of Hermione Granger. She has also appeared in the other 3 Harry Potter films: Chamber of Secrets (in 2002), Prisoner of Azkaban (in 2004), and Goblet of Fire (in 2005).

Harry Potter's fans have expressed different opinions about Emma Watson's way of playing the role of Hermione Granger: Some fans feel she is the perfect choice for the role; others believe that Emma fails get into character, and complain that she is "too pretty" for the role—an opinion shared by some of the film critics—as in the book series, Hermione has been described as being very "plain". However, the Harry Potter movies made Hermione a more powerful and interesting character than originally written by the author J. K. Rowling.

Shooting the Harry Potter movies kept Watson too busy to get involved in other projects; however, she has shown interest in expanding her film career beyond the "the Potter World".

Although her young age, Emma already has many awards for her roles in the Harry Potter film series. These awards are: Best Female Film Star (Silver): Otto Awards in 2003, Best Female Child Artist: Phoenix Film Critics Society, for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Total Film Magazine "Child Performance of the Year" in 2004, Best Female Film Star (Bronze): Otto Awards in 2005, Best Female Film Star (Gold): Otto Awards in 2006.
Also, she was nominated for other movie awards many times. She was nominated for the Saturn Award: for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Empire Award: for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Outstanding Supporting Actress: American Moviegoer Awards (2002), Best Performance in a Feature Film - Leading Young Actress: Young Artists Awards (2002), Best Ensemble in Feature Film: Young Artist Awards, for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Best Young Actress: Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards (2004), Best Young Actress: Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards (2005).
She also played the role of Hermione Granger in The Queen's Handbag, a special mini-episode of Harry Potter dedicated to the Queen Elizabeth II's 80th birthday.

Private life

Emma Watson is a sport lover and enjoys field hockey, tennis and also, rounders. As cats are her favorite animals, she owns 2 of them; their names are Bubbles and Domino.

Her musical preferences include hip hop, blues, and classic rock. She is a fan of U2, Eric Clapton, Eminem, and Nelly Furtado. Emma considers that her celebrity status is partially responsible for not having a boyfriend and says that boys are generally intimidated by her name and her notoriety. She was ranked #98 in the FHM’s list of 100 Sexiest Women in the World for the year 2007.

Emma's name is the same as her grandmother's, and a fictional character's in The Watsons, an unfinished novel written by Jane Austen. At age 15, she was the youngest actress to appear on the cover of Teen Vogue magazine. Along with Kenneth Branagh, Samantha Morton and Pierce Brosnan she also served on a jury created to select the 2004 teenaged filmmakers' "First Light Film Award" ceremony in the London's Leicester Square.
